15th-21st March - World's first supermodel still in sharp focus
A collection of photography celebrating Twiggy’s 60th birthday enters its final week at the National Portrait Gallery from March 15th to 21st.
Regarded by some as the one of world’s first supermodels, she encapsulated the mood of the swinging sixties and became the iconic face of the decade’s burgeoning fashion scene.
The collection starts with her launch in 1966 and runs through her shoots for all the major magazines during the following years, with photography on display by the likes of Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, Melvin Sokolsky, Ronald Traeger, Bert Stern and Norman Parkinson.
Effectively a photographic biography of her life, the collection follows her acting years in the 1970s, including a double-golden globe winning role in Ken Russell’s 1971 film adaptation of the musical The Boyfriend.
The collection illustrates how the modeling world took off and many of today’s photographic techniques can be traced back to these seminal works.
Entry is free and opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 10:00 GMT to 18:00 GMT, extended to 21:00 on Thursday and Friday nights.
